Volunteer Opportunities

We need you, your time, and your talents! Volunteers are a critical part of POP – we can’t do it without you! Volunteering is a wonderful way to get involved with other parents and Prince of Peace staff. And best of all, you’ll be having fun while you help!

Listed below for your review is a list of the committees coordinated by PTO each year. Our ability to implement these programs will depend on the level of support we receive from school families. Read the descriptions for each committee, and please consider volunteering for something. To volunteer, click here to download the Volunteer Commitment Form and check the box for any activity that interests you. Mark “ C” to be a Coordinator or mark “ V” to be a Volunteer. The descriptions have changed a bit this year, and we’ve added some new categories, so please take a moment to check them out. All parents/guardians are asked to complete this form and return it to the school office.  Your early support will allow us to start planning our activities.

Special Volunteer Requirements for Grades K-5

Families with children in grades K-5 will be required to sign up for playground duty. To ensure the safety of the students while outside during recess each family with a student in grades K-5 will volunteer for 3 days of recess/playground duty per school year. For more information, click here to visit our Playground Volunteer information page.

Security Policies for Volunteers

Diocesan security requirements are now in effect. To ensure the safety and well being of our children, all volunteers and coordinators will be subject to a background check. No person may volunteer in any capacity unless and until they have background screened, and unless and until they have been notified by the School Office of clearance through this procedure.

All persons volunteering at Prince of Peace Catholic School are required to have clearance from an individual security background check prior to volunteering in any capacity at Prince of Peace Catholic School. All persons volunteering at Prince of Peace Catholic School must have documented proof of their completion of a Diocesan approved Safe Environment training class.

Volunteer Committee Descriptions

  • Academic Fair (PSIA):
Students from our school may be selected to participate in the Private School Interscholastic Association (PSIA) competition. PSIA provides an extracurricular academic competition that includes 19 skill categories, producing 61 grade-level appropriate contests. The Coordinator will work with a designated teacher to organize and arrange for materials to be copied and distributed to participating students. Volunteers will be needed to help copy the materials.

  • Art A La Carte:
Art A La Carte is a supplemental art appreciation program presented by parent volunteers and is designed to complement our regular art curriculum. Parents are teamed up with another volunteer to teach 8-10 lessons per grade per year. Last year, PTO purchased a brand new curriculum for this program which includes lesson plans and complete materials for Powerpoint presentations for grades K-8. This is an exciting way to introduce an appreciation of art, while volunteering as little as 1-2 hours per month. No art background is necessary.

  • Book Fair:
PTO holds a Fall Book Fair and a Spring Book Fair, each one-week long. All proceeds go towards improving our Media Center. The Coordinator arranges the events with the book supplier, manages the inventory, schedules volunteers, and is responsible for cash management. Volunteers are needed to set up, tear down, and sell books to students and parents during the day. Volunteers are asked to sign up for two-hour time slots sometime during the week of the sale.

  • “Box Tops for Education”:
School and church families are asked to remove “Box Tops for Education” from General Mills products and place them in the labeled box in the School Office. The Coordinator will collect the submitted box tops and send them to General Mills for collection of funds for the school. PTO would like the Coordinator to consider expanding the program to include Campbell Soup labels, etc.

  • Counselor Chats:
Coordinator will work with our school counselor to provide refreshments for scheduled parent chat sessions and/or other programs. You might also be asked to assist the counselor with publicity for such events.

  • Heart & Soul Gala:
As one of the school’s major fundraising events, the Auction is extremely important to POP. All proceeds go directly to support the operation of our school. Volunteers are needed to assist with solicitation, underwriting, advertising, decorations, ticket sales, entertainment and much more for this fundraising event. The Auction Chair will be responsible for overseeing the event, but may appoint Co-Chairs to assist.

  • Fall Festival:
Our Fall Festival (formerly Pumpkin Patch) has become a wonderful autumn tradition at POP. The 7th grade coordinates this event, including games, prizes, concessions, the Haunted House, etc., and in return receives the proceeds to fund their graduation expenses, 8th grade trip, etc. The Coordinator should come from the 7th grade class.

  • Field Day:
This half-day event is usually held on a Friday in conjunction with the last day of school. It is coordinated by the school Athletic Department and involves all of the school students. Many volunteers are needed to help with the Field Day activities as classroom assistants, game supervisors, etc., and we need a Coordinator for this event.

  • Grandfriends Day:
This is a day when we welcome grandparents, aunts, uncles, or any special “grandfriend” to come and see our school and the wonderful environment our children learn in every day. This event is usually held on the Friday before Mother’s Day and is coordinated by our Development Director. We need someone to assist the Development Director in the planning of this event, as well as volunteers to welcome our grandfriends, coordinate refreshments, assist with directions, etc.

    • Teacher luncheon at Christmas

    • Induction Luncheon for National Junior Honor Society
    • Volunteers are also needed to assist the Coordinator before and during events.

  • Lost & Found:
Our Lost & Found is a busy place! There are lots of items looking for their proper owner, and someone must help them. We need a Coordinator to establish a method of dealing with lost and found items and getting them back where they belong, and also distributing those items not claimed to a charitable organization.

  • Media Center:
The Media Center offers a number of different volunteer opportunities. Support is needed daily to assist students with checking books in and out, reshelving books, cataloging new or donated books, and assisting the Librarian. Additionally, volunteers are needed to assist the Librarian in designing themes for the monthly display in our Media Center. The Coordinator will arrange for volunteers to supply this support.

  • New Family Hospitality:
The Coordinator will contact families of new students and arrange for a social event prior to the beginning of the school year. Volunteers are needed to follow up with new families to answer any questions.

  • Outreach Coordinator:
The Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating oiur school Outreach to the community. You will plan outreach projects such as collection of Halloween costumes, used eyeglasses, mittens, Thanksgiving dinner baskets, etc. with an eye toward helping others in our community. • Playground Monitors:
All school families K-5 are required to sign up for three (3) shifts of playground duty during the school year. This is an invaluable gift to the school and our children – without this assistance, our children would not be able to enjoy outside recess. Each shift begins at 11:00 a.m. and ends at 12:55 p.m., and four (4) volunteers are needed for each school day. The Coordinator will make sign up sheets available to the school families at Registration (Jan./Feb.) and Kindergarten Roundup (Aug.), then assign dates to those families that have not volunteered. You will need to prepare and distribute a parent monitor schedule, monitor family participation.

  • Prayer Partners:
Volunteers participate with the second grade students in liturgical celebrations once a week at Mass. These volunteers provide support, encouragement, and assistance to these students as they prepare for their First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. The Coordinator arranges for adults from the community to be Prayer Partners for these students.

  • Santa’s Workshop:
This event is held for one week between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It offers the students an opportunity to do their own Christmas shopping for those special people in their lives (parents, grandparents, siblings, teachers, pets, etc.). The Coordinator will obtain merchandise, arrange for sales volunteers, and maintain control of the funds. Volunteers are needed to assist with set up, tear down, student shopping, and gift-wrapping.

  • School Mass:
To coordinate our school masses, we need a group of volunteers to work with Maritta Zwartynski, Coordinator for school masses, as well as the Music Director, and the teachers. We need a Coordinator for Eucharistic Ministers who will work with other adult EM’s who serve during school mass. We will also need Coordinators for each of the following areas: Readers, Gift Bearers, and Ushers. These Coordinators will work with the students each week and will recruit other volunteers to do the same. In addition, we need one person to operate the lights during mass, and one person to produce the worship aids each week.

  • School Store:
Volunteers will work with the PTO Board member in charge of the School Store to sell merchandise and apparel, count and distribute inventory, assist in ordering supplies, and delivery of orders.

  • Six Flags “Read to Succeed”:
This program to encourage student reading is coordinated through the Media Center. Coordinator will work with our Librarian to get forms distributed and reward those students who meet the requirements.

  • Teacher Appreciation Week:
Our Prince of Peace teachers are very special everyday; however, we have set aside one week for parents and students to demonstrate their appreciation to the teachers. The Coordinator will work with the Homeroom Teams to plan and implement activities for Teacher Appreciation Week. Volunteers help with a luncheon, decorations, and other related activities.

  • Teacher’s Wish List:
The Teacher’s Wish List is a unique opportunity for families to donate funds that will go directly to support the activities in their child’s classroom. Teachers spend these funds on extra educational materials for their classroom. The Coordinator will request a Wish List from each teacher and display the lists during Parent Orientation and Back to School Nights. Families will have an opportunity to fulfill these teacher wishes by making donations. Volunteers are needed to collect and follow up on committed donations.

  • Turn Off the TV Week:
This is a national event held in the spring, and the object is to get our kids back outside, back to reading, back to family. Our Coordinator will work with our School Counselor to come up with commitment forms for the students, incentives, and prizes, and possibly help coordinate alternative events during that week.
