Library Policies

All students’ grades 5K – 6 visit the library as a class one day a week at a set time.  7th and 8th grade students have a set time every other week. However, any student may come to the library before school 7:30 – 8:00. The Media Center is also open after school until 4p.m. with after hours sign out of books until 6 p.m. Students are allowed to visit the Media Center any time during the school day with permission from their teachers. Due to our dismissal procedure and the need for supervision, students must have a parent with them or arrange with me beforehand to use the Media Center after school.

Students may check out 2 books at a time for one week. Parents may check out 5 books at a time. Books must be returned in order to check out another book. Students are encouraged to be good stewards of our library materials. Please help your students find a safe place for his/her library book. Paper bookmarks are available at the check out desk.

Mission Statement

The mission of our library is to encourage the exchange of ideas and the access of information among our students, faculty and community.  The Prince of Peace Media Center will provide appropriate reading material and access to information to foster a love of learning.  It will follow the guidelines set forth by the TCCED policies and the Selection Guidelines of the Catholic Library Association.

Donations

Donated books and other material will be accepted with the understanding that their disposition is entirely up to the Librarian who will judge them by the criteria contained in the selection policy. If a book is not considered appropriate for the collection it might be sent to a classroom or sold.

Challenges

If a student, parent or staff member complains of the content, language or other problem with a book they will be asked to fill out a Request for Consideration Form.  Once the form is filled out the book will be reviewed by the librarian and a committee of parents. The book will remain in the collection until a decision has been made.

Accelerated Reader

Prince of Peace expanded its Accelerated Reader (AR) program in 2006. By subscribing to a new online service with Renaissance Learning, the school now has access to all 100,000 plus quizzes and an additional 100 new tests are added each month. Now students may check online to determine if a quiz is available for the books they are reading. This has greatly expanded the number and variety of books available to students since they are not limited to books in our Media Center.  Parents are now able to check their student’s progress in meeting their AR reading goals.  AR tests will still be taken at school during school hours. They are not taken at home.

To Access students account

To access the Accelerated Reader website and request a password please click on the following link https://hosted54.renlearn.com/222877. At the Renaissance Learning website click on PARENT and then click on the blue line REQUEST PARENT/GUARDIAN ACCESS. You will then be assigned a password.

To check book levels and points

Click on the following link www.renlearn.com, click on order quizzes and then choose advanced search. At this point you can customize your search to fit your student. You will be able to search by title or use the drop down box to search by author. Under the topic drop down box you will be able to choose a specific subject such as horses, holidays, arts etc. Interest level will let you select books appropriate for your child’s age. Lower Level books will be appropriate for students grades K – 2 or 3; Middle Level would be grades 3 – 6, Higher Level will indicate books for grades 6 and above. As you choose books for your student, parents should keep in mind that the AR level indicates the degree of difficulty of a book. AR is not a rating system and does not determine the suitability of the content or merit of a book.
